The Mystery of Faith

Lots of people are fond of mountains. Many spend a good part of their lives developing and maintaining a physical condition that allows them to accomplish the feat of reaching those hilltops. Some even travel around the world to climb mountains of different levels of difficulty. Just in case, I am not one of those people. In my case, if I have to climb a hill for some reason, thank goodness for roads and motor vehicles.   But there is something else that piques my curiosity and it is how much mountains are mentioned in the Bible. There are mountains everywhere! According to an article I read, mountains are mentioned about 500 times. On the one hand, it is because mountains are part of the geography where biblical history takes place. But there is also an important connection between God and mountains.   We could think of Mount Sinai, the place where God gives the law to his people through Moses, or Mount Carmel, where Elijah faces the prophets and Baal, and obviously Zion, the mountain

Miles de personas son aficionadas con las montañas. Muchos dedican buena parte de sus vidas a desarrollar y mantener una condición física que les permita realizar la hazaña de subirlos. Algunos viajan alrededor del mundo para subir montes de distintos niveles de dificultad.   Por si acaso, yo no soy una de esas personas. Have you ever wished things were different? Today is Ash Wednesday. In the Christian church calendar, this represents the beginning of the Lenten season. It is about the 40 days before the events of Jesus' death and resurrection. These 40 days (a symbolic period in the biblical narrative) are traditionally dedicated to reflection and repentance.   But repentance confronts us.   Ruth Haley Barton wrote that "Lent is a spiritual season for seeing, naming, and confessing our own darkness until eventually it gives way to God's marvelous light." Only by recognizing that there is that darkness in us can we reach the place of repentance.   Repentance has to do with longing for something to be different, with lamenting the current reality, but also the commitment to do what is within reach for that change to take place. ¿Alguna vez has deseado que las cosas fueran distintas? Hoy se celebra el miércoles de ceniza. En el calendario de la iglesia cristiana, esto representa el comienzo de la temporada de cuaresma. Se trata de los 40 días antes de los eventos de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús.     Tradicionalmente se dedica estos 40 días (periodo simbólico en la narrativa bíblica) a la reflexión y al arrepentimiento.    Pero arrepentimiento nos confronta.    Ruth Haley Barton escribió que “Cuaresma es una temporada espiritual para ver, nombrar, y confesar nuestra propia oscuridad hasta que eventualmente se abra paso a la luz maravillosa de Dios”.    Solo al reconocer que existe esa oscuridad en nosotros es que podemos llegar al lugar de arrepentimiento.     Arrepentimiento tiene que ver con anhelo de que algo sea diferente, con el lamento ante la realidad, pero también el compromiso de hacer lo que está al alcance para que ese cambio se de.  Imagen de RioC.
